WordPress is a content management system that allows for easy publishing of web pages and content onto the internet. It is a type of CMS that is free to use and allows for open source blogging.
WordPress’ key feature is that it gives the user a “Dashboard” interface, which gives the user an overview of the page content, themes, widgets and user comments. To access the CMS dashboard, the user must log in via the login page using a username and password.
The branch menu on the left hand side allows the user to choose which element of the site to modify. The most common choice is to edit the content of the pages and this can accessed via the pages section. The user can then either edit or create a new page. The interface then shows the page layout in visual form, or in HTML form, for the more experienced CMS users.
WordPress also gives users the opportunity to edit templates. All templates are written in PHP and the more skilled users who have an understanding of PHP will use the template editor section to edit the themes to fulfil their requirements.
The default template is the page template, and all pages are assigned to it. However, a new template can be added manually via the FTP client which can be accessed via the CMS. The new template will contain PHP and can then be applied to the page. However, this method is for skilled users only.
The CMS is very user friendly, where the GUI is very easy to understand and the page content editor is very simple to use, WordPress can publish content onto the site in seconds. It is the most preferred type of CMS with 22% of all new websites in 2011 using the WordPress CMS.
The CMS also allows for site visitors to comment on the pages, however, comments would have to be approved by the site admin via the dashboard provided by the CMS first.
